In 1828 the D&H Canal company sent its engineer, Horatio Allan, to Newcastle, England to evaluate steam engines for enabling coal delivery via the Gravity Railroad. On August 8, 1829 Honesdale’s citizens came to see the operation of this first steam locomotive, The Stourbridge Lion. So began the era of commercial railroad in the USA. A replica of the Stourbridge Lion is on display at the Wayne County Historical Society. From spring to Christmas, the similarly named Stourbridge Train Line takes passengers between Honesdale and Hawley.
Hawley’s annual harvest festival is the perfect time to take in the crisp autumn air while meandering around the borough streets. Hay rides and live music are part of the entertainment. Maple leaves are often at their peak, turning bright hues of orange, yellow and red. The scent of cinnamon and vanilla from warm apple cider is an added delight.
“Winter Wonderland” is a lovely holiday song that captures the essence of the season. This song is especially cherished by Honesdale residents. Richard Bernard Smith, who lived opposite Honesdale’s Central Park, penned the song lyrics in 1934. Today a plaque marks the location (925 Church Street) of his former residence where he was inspired by many a winter scene of children playing in Honesdale’s Central Park.
The Allen House (later known as the Hotel Allen) was the first concrete building in the state when it was constructed in 1857 on the corner of Church and 9th Streets in Honesdale. It was a meeting place for campaigning politicians and business leaders who would enjoy libations and look upon Irving Cliff from the Allen’s piazza. It was the place to be seen among a metropolitan crowd and was known as the hot-spot of its day.
Years ago farm stands lined country roads across Wayne County. Finding the juiciest peach or the most flavorful tomato was a joyous experience. Luckily, you can still find farm stands if you know where to look. To this day, some of the best produce comes from Wayne County.
